Excellent blog. Needs to be pointed out the unprecedented global coordination to the crisis. Gordon Brown and Labour Government instrumental in organising the response. Labour leads the world while Cameron and Osborne recite 30 year old defunct economic mantras.
Only Labour knows how to lead on the economy.

This is more reason Labour needs to start making this known to the general public!
The media at th emoment are cosying up to stylish but no substance David Cameron at the moment but Labour needs to let the public understands they've got what it takes in term of policies and people.

Great points about Osborne. His arguments are deeply flawed. I think 1981 budget was disaster but it would be worse now because private sector is in crisis and could not substitute for public sector investment. In other words, the 'Treasury View' is obviously bankrupt.
It is also interesting to note how isolated the Tories are. G20 includes governments with wide range of ideological commitments but they all agree to stimulus plan. The Tories have adopted a dangerous and obscure economic position.

Keep up the good work.

Sen is a very impressive guy in his field. But my fear about the use of the "equality of capacity" concept is that it will be used to justify further privatisation of public services - to the benefit of shareholders and detriment of service-users and staff.

I hope you will have something to say about co-production of services. Look forward to reading it.

[...] ‘Total Place’ in Birmingham « – Total Place is an important idea, one which I first came across many years ago when Dr Dick Atkinson was trying to work out the total public spend for Balsall Heath. I know he shared that passion with both government an opposition. It helps at city level, but I think key decision making will change when there is also some way of making ti work at neighborhood level. To quote from one of the local MP’s: “The BeBirmingham partnership recently estimated that in total around £7.5 billion of public money was invested in the city in 2008-09. That’s a huge amount. Over a billion is spent on education.” [...]

Glad to see you havent forgotten people with learning disabilties in the total place pilot. It seems a hueg challenge to produce something more efficient and espec in the time scales. It will be interesting to follow up and see the results next year.

Liam - let's hope that the stock market is playing its historical role of leading indicator. There is little doubt it is ahead of itself and a late summer correction might be on the cards. Commodity futures are also predicting an imminent recovery. Let's hope they are right. Congratulations on the new appointment!
